Contractors invited for Abu Dhabi border road

13 December 2007
Abu Dhabi Municipality has invited local and international contractors to prequalify by 10 January for the contract to build the upgrade of Mafraq to Ghuweifat highway.

The estimated AED3bn ($817m) project involves the construction of a 350-kilometre-long road and a number of interchanges, including a major intersection at Ruwais.

The highway should act as a catalyst for development in the western region. Projects planned include the expansion of the Borouge petrochemicals plant, construction of an aluminium smelter at Ruwais, and tourism developments at Jebel Dhanna, and Sir Bani Yas, Dalma and Bahraini islands.

The UK’s Mott Macdonald is the project manager (MEED 25:5:07).
