Work covers construction and maintenance of colleges of architecture and computing sciences and engineering at Sabah al-Salem University City

Companies have been invited to submit prequalification documents by 27 September for the contract to construct and maintain Kuwait University’s College of Architecture (COA) and College of Computing Sciences and Engineering (CCSE) buildings at Sabah al-Salem University City in Shadadiyah.

Totalling about 44,000 square metres (sq m), the buildings will complete the initial build-out of the 6 million sq m Sabah al-Salem Kuwait University City campus. Located on opposite ends of the site, the buildings will form new gateways at the western and eastern ends of the academic campus.

In 2016, US-based architectural firm HOK was selected to design the College of Architecture (COA) and College of Computing Sciences and Engineering (CCSE) buildings.

The US-based firm is working on the project with the local office of KEO International Consultants as the architect of record. KEO will also provide construction supervision services for the two colleges.

HOK was earlier involved in the project as the consultant for the masterplan.

Locally-registered contractors have also been prequalified for a contract to build roads and bridges serving Kuwait University’s Sabah al-Salem University campus project.

The prequalified companies are:

  • Combined Group Contracting Company
  • Alghanim International General Trading and Contracting Company
  • Consolidated Contractors Company
  • Arab Kuwait Contractors Company
  • Ahmadiah General Trading & Contracting Company
  • Mohammed Abdulmohsin al-Kharafi & Sons Company
  • United Gulf Construction Company
  • Kuwait Company for Process Plant Construction & Contracting

The Sabah al-Salem University City has been a significant programme of construction work for contractors in Kuwait. In 2016, the Central Tenders Committee (CTC) approved the award of a KD37m ($123m) contract to a joint venture (JV) of the local Kharafi National and China State Construction Engineering Corporation for the construction of a central utilities plant at the site.

In 2015, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education awarded a joint venture of China State and Kharafi National a KD140m contract for building work on the project.
