Contracts awarded for sulphur recovery units

27 September 2002

India's Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has been formally awarded two engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracts worth a total of KD 7.5 million ($24 million) for the upgrade and revamp of sulphur recovery units (SRUs) at the Shuaiba and Mina Abdullah refineries (MEED 19:7:02; 29:3:02).

The larger of the two contracts, worth KD 4.3 million ($14 million), is to increase the capacity of the SRU at Shuaiba to 700 tonnes a day (t/d) from 270 t/d.

The second contract is valued at KD 3.2 million ($10 million) and covers an increase in the SRU capacity at Mina Abdullah to 400 t/d from 270 t/d. The increase in capacity at both SRUs will be carried out through debottlenecking and will take 24-28 months to complete. L&T will be responsible for process design, detailed engineering and installation.

The US' Parsons Engineering Corporation has carried out the basic engineering and design for both schemes. Both projects are based on the oxygen enrichment technology provided by the UK office of Parsons. The client is Kuwait National Petroleum Company.
