Convention centre contracts let

Belgium's Six Construct and the local Emirates Trading Agency (ETA) have won contracts worth a total of AED 637 million ($173 million) for the two main elements of package 9 on the Abu Dhabi convention centre project (MEED 5:4:02).

For the first element, Six Construct has been awarded an estimated AED 247 million ($67 million) contract for the general construction and architectural finishes for the convention centre and palaces. For the second, ETA has been awarded an estimated AED 390 million ($106 million) contract. It covers the mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) works, the construction of kitchens and related facilities.

Seven companies submitted bids by 2 June for package 10. They include Interbeton of the Netherlands, SamsungCorporation of South Korea, Six Construct, the UK's Balfour Beatty, Athens-based Consolidated Contractors International Company (CCC)and Canada's Milne Nichol. Estimated to be worth AED 200 million ($55 million), package 10 involves the general construction, architectural finishes, MEP works, ramps and parking facilities for the east and west hotels (MEED 15:3:02).

The convention centre is being built to host the GCC summit in late 2004. The US' Turner International is the project manager (MEED 3:8:01).
