Number of Mena Covid-19 cases keeps growing

08 April 2020
Saudi Arabia could eventually have up to 200,000 cases if social distancing measures are not complied with, health minister warns

The Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region has 78,512 confirmed cases of Covid-19 as of 8 April, according to data by Johns Hopkins University.

Saudi Arabia remains the GCC’s worst-hit country for Covid-19 cases, with 2,795 infections, 615 recoveries and 41 deaths reported to date.

Health Minister Tawfiq al-Rabiah said the eventual number of coronavirus cases in Saudi Arabia could be as low as 10,000 or as high as 200,000 depending on compliance with curfews and social distancing.

The kingdom’s Interior Ministry has brought forward closure plans for previously unaffected parts of the country.

This means effectively all of Saudi Arabia’s residents are restricted from outdoor movement, except to leave their homes only for medical or food supplies locally between 6am and 3pm.

In Bahrain, which has 811 confirmed Covid-19 cases with 458 recoveries and five deaths, closures have been extended until at least 23 April.

The country’s Supreme Council of Health said the closure of movie theatres, gyms, swimming pools, shisha cafés, salons and non-essential medical services will be effective for the period 9-23 April.

Restaurants may only conduct deliveries, and public gatherings are to remain limited to five individuals or fewer during the period. All citizens and residents are required to wear face masks in public.
