Cox to design UAE University campus

Australia's Cox Grouphas been appointed design consultant on the UAE University campus project being developed by the local Mubadala Development Company. The appointment leaves the way open for the first packages to be tendered in the second quarter of 2006 on the $300 million-400 million project (MEED 25:2:05).

Other firms prequalified for the design contract included Skidmore Owings & Merrill (SOM), Helmuth Obata & Kassabaum (HOK)and Raphael Vinoly, all US-based, the local office of KEO International Consultantsand Australia's Woods Bagot. Cox joins on the project another Australian firm Bovis Lend Lease, which is providing project management services for the design and procurement phases.

The 280,000-square-metre campus, to be implemented under a 28-year build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) agreement, will accommodate 19,000 students and include educational and sports facilities as well as residential accommodation. Mubadala is planning to undertake the project in phases, with overall completion set for 2011/12.

Woods Bagotcarried out the masterplan for the development; HSBCis acting as financial adviser (MEED 11:2:05).
