Dahabi seeks US funding to introduce business-friendly reforms

06 December 2007
Jordan’s new prime minister Nader Dahabi is seeking investment from a US government aid agency to introduce business-friendly reforms.

Dahabi wants extra funding for new policies to lower the cost of starting a business and remove barriers to trade. The prime minister lobbied for new funding from the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) during a meeting with its representatives on 5 December.

The MCC, which is part of the US Department of State, gave Jordan $25m of aid during 2006.
Some $16.5m was spent by Jordan’s different municipal governments and the remaining $8.5m was used to improve the efficiency of the Jordan Customs Department.

Jordan has met 11 out of 17 indicators used by the MCC to determine whether countries are transparent and free of corruption.
