Direct reduction plant’s capacity exceeds contractual obligations

Italy’s Danieli has completed an integrated mill at the Emirates Steel Industries’ (ESI) steel plant in Abu Dhabi.

According to the Italian contractor, it has completed work on the mill after testing the direct reduction plant and steelmaking shop.

The tests show the direct reduction plant has a production capacity of 1.8 million tones a year (t/y), which exceeds the 1.6 million t/y required by Danieli’s contract with ESI.

The meltshop’s capacity is 1.4 million t/y. It feeds two new and one existing bar and wire-rod rolling mills.

Danieli is also working on another phase of the ESI steel plant, which involves building a 1.8 million-t/y direct reduction plant that will produce beams up to 1 metre in width. It will start production in mid-2010 (MEED 05:02:08).
