Dar al Handasah appointed for Oman port study

09 February 2009
The Omani government has appointed Dar Al Handasah (Shair & Partners) as consultant for a feasibility study into the development of a full commercial port at Shinas.

The Lebanese consultant bid OR4m ($10m) to draw up a masterplan and design for the port, which would establish a new marine gateway on Oman's northern coast.

The company will then oversee construction of the new facility and consult with the Transport Ministry in Muscat over the management of port operations.

It will take considerable work to convert the existing fishing harbour at Shinas into a full commercial port. The site has a draft of 4 metres, and would need to be deepened significantly to cope with large commercial vessels.
