Work will involve building three desalination plants
Saudi Arabias Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) has extended the bid submission date for companies to submit prices for the contracts to build three desalination projects and a transmission system.
Contractors now have until 24 November to submit prices for the tender. The previous submission date was 23 October.
The Haql 3, Duba 4 and Al-Wajh 4 desalination plants will each have a capacity of 2 million imperial gallons a day (MIGD). The work will also involve providing and installing water transmission systems to link the plants into the grid.
The projects are part of the kingdoms efforts to boost capacity to meet the rising residential and industrial demand for water. Saudi Arabia will account for 40 per cent of the forecast additional 2,233MIGD of desalination capacity required in the GCC by 2020, according to latest research from MEEDs research division, MEED Insight.
In April, SWCC invited companies to submit bids for the contract to expand the 85MIGD desalination component of the Shoaiba 2 plant, located just south of Jeddah. The work will involve fitting a multi-effect distillation expansion unit to increase the capacity of the plant by 16MIGD.
