The project is being tendered in two packages. The first calls for the supply and installation of a 200-kilometre, 400-kV overhead transmission line from Marib to Sanaa and the construction of two gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substations with capacities of 400 kV and 132/32 kV. The second package is for the supply and installation of gas turbines with capacity of 300 MW for a power plant at Marib.
The $100 million substations and transmission line work is being fully financed by a loan from the Kuwait-based Arab Fund for Economic & Social Development. The Saudi Development Fund will provide $50 million towards the $130 million power plant, while the remainder is being covered by the government.
The US' KuljianEngineering Corporation has prepared designs and tender documents. Bidding is under way on the construction supervision contract. Among the bidders are Fichtnerand Lahmeyer International, both of Germany, Kuljian, the UK's PB Powerand Jordan's National Electric Power Company (Nepco).
