Doha-based Barwa Real Estate Company has announced plans to finish its QR1.3bn ($357m) Mesaken Saliyah affordable-housing project in July, a year later than expected.  

Barwa cancelled its original construction contract last year with the local Panceltica after a dispute over contract variations, subcontractor fees and potential damages due to construction delays.

Saliyah is now being completed by Waseef, the operational arm of Barwa, which was created in November 2009 after a merger of Barwa Real Estate Management, Barwa Maintenance Service Management and Barwa Resorts & Hotels.  

The project consists of 62 residential buildings comprising of 1,984 two and three-bedroom residential units. Saliyah also includes recreational areas, a supermarket, playgrounds and swimming pools.     

The 400,000 square-metre Mesaken Saliyah is the second project developed under Qatar’s Barwa Housing Programme, which is part of the residential component of Qatar Vision 2030.

Qatar Vision is a government plan to build safe and sustainable communities throughout the country, while the housing programme is a private sector initiative to provide housing to Qataris of all income levels.

Saliyah’s sister development, Mesaken Masemier, was finished and handed over to stakeholders in February 2009.
