Government plans to spend $2.3bn upgrading rail network

Canadian engineering and construction firm Dessau has won a $38.8m contract to design a railway line in Algeria, according to a company statement.

This contract is part of a $2.3bn government project to revamp the country’s rail network and was awarded by a consortium of China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation and Turkey’s Ozgun Construction.

Dessau will carry out the preliminary and final designs for the construction of a 170-kilometre line between Bordj Bou Arreridj and Thenia in northeast Algeria. It will also be responsible for designing bridges and drainage structures as well as the reconstruction of roads and other infrastructure.

The railway will operate as a passenger and freight rail network, and trains will be able to travel up to 160km an hour.
