Developments on Daura

07 August 2004
Contractors were invited in late July to submit bid clarifications for the contract to upgrade the 110,000-barrel-a-day (b/d) Daura refinery, located on the outskirts of Baghdad. Seven companies - including South Korea's SK Engineering & Construction, Kellogg Brown & Rootof the US, Paris-based Technipand Russia's Technopromexport- have submitted bids for the contract.

The project entails revamping a 10,000-b/d catalytic reformer unit and a 13,000-b/d diesel hydro-desulphurisation unit. Midland Refinery Companyis the client.

An award is also pending at State Company for Oil Projects (SCOP)for the installation of a 70,000-b/d crude distillation unit at the refinery. Output from the country's dilapidated refineries has slumped since last May. Diesel production fell to 11 million litres a day (l/d) in June from about 15 million l/d in April, forcing Iraq to increase imports of refined products from neighbouring countries (MEED 20:2:04).
