DM to sound the toll bell

17 December 2004
Dubai Municipality (DM) is preparing to introduce a road toll system as early as 2005, Nasser Saaed, general co-ordinator for the Dubai light rail transport (LRT) project and director of DM's roads department, told MEED's Middle East Rail Projects conference on 12 December. The project is part of a larger scheme aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing congestion in the emirate. Another, larger element of the integrated traffic scheme will be the estimated $4,000 million LRT project, which is presently being tendered (see Cover Story).

Four consortia are preparing to bid in late February for the contract to install the electronic toll system. The consortia leaders are: Austria's Kapsch; Japan's Mitsubishi Corporation; a company identified as Televentfrom Spain; and a US company identified as Transco. The contract is expected to be awarded within three months of bids going in at the municipality. The project will then have to receive final approval from the government.

Saeed told MEED that two roads in central Dubai, including Al-Maktoum road, and all incoming roads to Dubai would be charged in an attempt to control traffic. However, no further details have been released on the project.
