Doha extends deadline for sports hall project

10 July 2012

Contractors now have until 22 July to submit prices for construction tender

The Qatar Olympic Committee has extended the submission deadline for the main construction package on the Al-Sadd Sports Club multi-purpose hall in Doha.

Contractors now have until 22 July for the construction deal. The previous submission date was 8 July.

The Al-Sadd Sports Club is located close to the Al-Waab intersection in Doha. The multi-purpose sports hall has been designed for basketball, volleyball, handball, badminton and gymnastics, with a total seating capacity of 7,500. The hall will have a total built-up area of 52,200 square metres and will consist of five levels and basement car parking.

The hall could be used for the men’s World Handball World Championships that Doha will host in January 2015.

Qatar is also planning to tender a sports hall at Al-Thumama to the north of Doha.

On 23 May, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) rejected bids from Doha and the Azerbaijan capital Baku to host the 2020 Olympics as it cut the list of five applicant cities to a final list of three candidate cities. Istanbul, Madrid and Tokyo will now compete for the rights to host the 2020 Games.
