Doosan wins Rehab conversion

06 June 2003
South Korea's Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Companyhas received a letter of intent for the conversion of the Rehab power station to combined cycle. The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract, due to be signed with the Central Electricity Generating Company (Cegco) in the second week of June, is valued at $83 million. Bids are also under evaluation for a second combined-cycle conversion project, covering the Hussain power plant (MEED 25:4:03).

The Rehab project involves the supply and installation of a 110-MW steam turbine and waste heat recovery boiler. The contract will take 22 months to complete. Rehab, which meets power demand in the Amman area, comprises two 100-MW gas turbines supplied by the US' GE Power Systems.

About six international contractors submitted bids in mid-May for the Hussain project. Bidders include Italy's Ansaldo Energia, Hyundai Engineering & Construction Companyof South Korea, Paris-based Alstom Power, Turkey's Gama, Poland's Elektrinand Doosan. The project involves the supply and installation of a steam turbine, a gas turbine and two waste heat recovery boilers. The consultant for both projects is the US' Kuljian Engineering Corporation.

Cegco is also expected to issue soon an EPC tender for the 300-350-MW Kherbet al-Samra project. The government had originally proposed that the scheme would be implemented as an independent power project (IPP). However, it is now looking at an EPC option, in view of the pressing need for new power capacity.

The conversion of the thermal power plants is being undertaken in preparation for the delivery of Egyptian gas through a new pipeline, which is under construction.
