State-owned Egypt Hydrocarbon Corporation has awarded UAE-based Drake & Scull International a $38.7m contract for the construction of an ammonium nitrate plant at Ain Sukhna in the northeast of Egypt.

The company entered into a joint venture with Egyptian general contractors, Hassan Allam Construction, to execute the project, according to a 13 December press release.

The contract covers the construction and pre- commissioning of four packages; civil works, mechanical equipment and storage tank erection works, piping and structural steel fabrication and erection works.

The plant comprises a nitric acid unit and ammonium nitrate unit. Once completed in April 2014, it will produce 1,060 tonnes a day (t/d) of mining grade ammonium nitrate, for use in the mining and construction industries.

The project is the first for Drake and Scull Water and Power in Egypt’s Petrochemical industry since the Launch of its specialised regional Oil and Gas division in 2010.
