24 July 2008
Du, the UAE's second telecoms operator, continued to cut its losses during the April to June quarter, a year after it signed up its first mobile customers.

The company lost AED44m ($12m) over the three months, down from a loss of AED62m in the first quarter of the year. In the second quarter of 2007, it lost AED281m.

Du generated revenues of AED670m from its mobile phone business, compared with AED152m during the same period of 2007.

Its fixed-line business generated revenues of AED208m, up from AED123m in 2007.

Du launched its fixed-line services across the UAE in July 2007, however it has held a fixed-line monopoly in Dubai Internet City and Dubai Media City free-trade zones since they were established in 2005.

The operator had 1.9 million mobile phone customers at the end of June, compared with 550,000 a year ago.
