Dubai airport faces closure in eight years

19 October 2007
Dubai International Airport could be shut down in eight years' time and the site used for real estate development, according to a leading figure in the UAE's aviation and property sectors.

Khalid Harib bin Harib, chief executive officer of real estate at Dubai World Central, part of Dubai Aviation Corporation Authority, says all airlines will have moved their operations to the new airport in Jebel Ali by 2015. At that point, the area will be redeveloped. 'We will convert it into real estate,' he says. No further details of the plans have been revealed, although another source close to the project indicates that it is likely to be focused on residential rather than commercial development. The site is in a prime location close to the traditional centre of the city. If it goes ahead, it will mean the massive expansion currently under way at Dubai International will only be in use for a few years. Terminal 3 and Concourse 2 at the airport are both due to open by mid-2008. Concourse 3, which is dedicated to the A380 super-jumbo, is expected to be operational in 2009. Between them, the new facilities will increase the airport's capacity from about 30 million passengers a year to 70 million. The entire project is not expected to be completed until late 2010, which could give the newly expanded airport just five years of operations before any redevelopment work begins. Dubai International Airport was not available for comment. The new airport at Jebel Ali is just 40 kilometres away. It will have capacity for 120 million passengers a year when it is fully operational. The first commercial flight from the airport is likely to be a low-cost carrier in June 2008.
