Emirate identifies road projects to be completed by 2019

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, UAE vice-president and prime minister and ruler of Dubai, has approved the Dubai Roads & Transport Authority (RTA)’s Traffic and Transportation Plan 2030.

The plan, approved on 6 August, includes a number of landmark road projects. They comprise:

  • Remaining phases of the Al-Shindagha Crossing. The second phase of this flagship project will be implemented in the first quarter of 2017. It aims to develop the Al-Shindagha Crossing from Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Road after its intersection with Abu Hail Road. The third phase of the project aims to develop Al-Shindagha Crossing after the intersection of Abu Hail Road with Cairo Road and Al Rasheed Road. It also includes Al Mamzar Bridge and Abu Hail bridge
  • Jewel of the Creek infrastructure, including a pedestrian bridge at Bani Yas street
  • An intersection between Jebel Ali Road and Al-Hebab and Al-Qudra roads as well as a flyover for cyclists
  • Marine transport stations for the Dubai Water Canal and Business Bay
  • Expansion of the Burj Khalifa metro station
  • New designs for metro buses
  • 36 bridges
  • Improvements of the Airport Road including the construction of five bridges and tunnels that will help increase the capacity of the airport road to 5,000 vehicles per hour

These projects will be carried out through five phases that will start in the middle of 2017, with completion set for November 2019, according to the Emirates News Agency (Wam).

Dubai has awarded several new road construction contracts this year.

In early May, the RTA awarded the local Wade Adams Contracting a AED105m ($29m) contract to build a new flyover crossing Sheikh Zayed Road and connecting Jebel Ali Free Zone North and South.

In February, Wade Adams won an estimated AED611m contract for the upgrade of an intersection as part of Dubai’s Shindagha corridor scheme.
