State utility Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (Dewa) has awarded four substation contracts worth a total of AED1.2bn ($327m) as part of its programme to increase the capacity and efficiency of its electricity and transmission networks.
Dewa awarded a AED314.9m contract to the US’ Grid Solutions to build and install a substation at Canal Garden Station, which will meet the expected growth in demand from new projects in the Al-Basha area of the city. The substation is due to be commissioned by March 2020.
Germany’s Siemens was awarded a AED323m contract to develop a substation in the Dubai south area. The substation will be located within the Dubai World Central project, and is scheduled to be completed by March 2020.
A AED304.5m contract to develop a Dubai North substation was awarded to Saudi Arabia’s Al-Fanar. The substation, which is being developed to expand the transmission and distribution network around the airport, is due to be commissioned by January 2021.
The final contract, worth AED338.9m, was awarded to Switzerland’s ABB to build a new Shams substation to meet demand from the expansion of the planned Mohammed bin Rashid (MBR) solar park. The substation is due to be completed by December 2020.
