Transport authority tries to encourage public to use metro
Dubai’s Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) is considering issuing licences for new taxis to complement the arrival of the Dubai Metro.
The authority has not issued any new licenses for taxis in 2009 and has said it is cautious about doing so in 2010, in an effort to promote the metro and encourage people to use public transport.
However, the RTA says it will set out a new strategy for the city’s taxis in the coming weeks to support the metro. Passengers on the rail system still require transport to and from the metro stations, particularly as only 10 of the 29 stations are now open.
The Red Line of the metro opened on 10 September.
