02 September 2005
The joint venture of South Africa's Africonand the local Al-Burj Engineering Consultantshas started work on a comprehensive masterplan study for Dubai's road and transport systems. The study is expected to take about nine months. France's MVA Systrais already working on a separate transport masterplan for the Al-Sufouh area running from the Burjal-Arab hotel to the Jumeirah Beach Residence development. The client for both projects is Dubai Municipality (DM), which is also looking to resolve the emirate's growing parking problems. The municipality has invited consultants to purchase terms of reference by 29 August for the eight-month Dubai Parking Control System study. The various plans are the latest efforts by DM to improve the deteriorating traffic conditions in the emirate. In July, it awarded a consultancy contract to the UK-based Maunsell to develop a comprehensive water-based public transport system in Dubai and Sharjah (MEED 5:8:05).
