Dubai hangar project goes for tender

Dubai-based Emirates has issued the tender for the main package on the proposed new hangar project at Dubai International Airport (DIA). Bids are due to be returned by 3 September for the contract, which is estimated to be worth AED 350 million ($95 million - MEED 13:6:03; 14:3:03).

Prospective bidders include Cyprus-based Joannou & Pareskevaides (J&P - Overseas),the local/Belgian Bel Hasa Six Construct, the local/South African joint venture of Al-Habtoor Engineering Enterprises with Murray & Roberts Contractors (Middle East), a teamof Turkey's TEPE Akfin with India's Punj Lloydand Al-Naboodah Laing and Dutco Balfour Beatty, both local/UK, the local Arabian Construction Company (ACC) with Interbeton of the Netherlands , Canada's SNC Lavalin, Japan's Taiseiand an unidentified French firm.

The main package calls for the construction of: eight hangars for light and heavy maintenance over a total area of about 27,700 square metres; a 12,000-square-metre workshop and central plant building; two taxiways; offices; a power complex; aircraft washing bay; gatehouse; and a 73,000-square-metre car park building.

In addition to the main works contract, several specialist packages will be tendered on the project, known as the Emirates New Engineering Centre (ENEC).

A contract award is pending for the first specialist package - structural steel - for which bids are under evaluation (MEED 27:6:03). The other specialist packages include hangar doors, chilled water production facilities, generating sets, precast concrete for car parking, landside buildings and craning bridges.

The estimated AED 1,000 million ($272 million) ENEC facility will be used by Emirates and be built at a site next to the airport exhibition centre. The first phase of the project is due to be completed by the end of September 2004 and the remaining facilities are targeted to be completed a year later. The proposed facilities will be designed to serve wide-bodied Airbus A380 aircraft.

France's Aeroports de Paris (AdP)is acting as project manager and overall design and lead consultant. The UK's Fraser Nag & Partnershipis assisting AdP on the project (MEED 6:12:02).
