Dubai issues new rules for construction safety

29 July 2008
Dubai Municipality has published a new set of safety guidelines for construction sites.

The Safety Manual for Construction Works outlines general and specific safety procedures for all types of construction and demolition works in the emirate.

The document states that consultants and contractors are responsible for the overall safety of construction sites and the wellbeing of all employees and those present at the site or close to it.

It also includes more stringent fire safety procedures, following a spate of fires at projects under construction over the last two years. The new guidelines call for consultants and contractors to install permanent fire prevention devices and arrange water tanks and water pumps at construction sites as early as possible.

According to the municipality, there were 249 accidents on construction sites in 2007.
