Dubai to launch bus rapid transit scheme

Transport offering will complement other last mile offerings

Dubai is studying a bus rapid transit (BRT) scheme to complement available last mile transport services.

Details of the project will be announced later, says Abdullah Yousif al-Ali, CEO of the Public Transport Agency at the Dubai Roads & Transport Authority (RTA), speaking to MEED on the sidelines of the launch of Dubai’s car sharing service on 15 January.

Similar to the car sharing service, a BRT is one of the measures being considered by the Dubai government to encourage the use of public transport services such as the Dubai Metro and tram networks. “We are looking at different options and directions to encourage more people to use public transport networks… a key component of this strategy is expanding last mile options,” Al-Ali said, acknowledging that many people “are avoiding the use of public transport because of the last mile issue.”

A car sharing service is targeting residents with a driving license who do not own a car to not buy a car.

“If you have a driving license and you only need to use a car short-term or by the hour, we want to make sure that the service is there,” Al-Ali said.
