Dubailand transport systems start moving

11 November 2005
Work is expected to start on two public transport systems in Dubailand next year. Prequalification has started for the civil works contract on City of Arabia's automated people mover project. The contract involves the construction of all associated civil and mechanical and electrical works, including 6.8 kilometres of track viaduct, 14 stations and a maintenance depot.

The project also includes an interchange at Mall of Arabia that will eventually link the system into Dubai Light Rail's proposed blue line, which will connect Dubai International Airport and the new Jebel Ali International Airport. Hong Kong-based P&T Architects & Engineersis the engineering and design consultant. The US' Hill Internationalis the project manager (MEED 9:9:05).

A larger public transport system is also planned by master developer Dubailand. It is preparing to issue tenders in January for a system that will link Dubailand's main attractions. France's Systrais the consultant for the scheme.

Additional rail links to Dubailand from Dubai Light Rail are also under consideration. The plans include a spur line that will be added to the red line connecting Dubailand to Palm Jumeirah, and an extension of the green line to link Dubailand and Bur Dubai (see Cover Story).
