Dutco Balfour Beatty frontrunner for Dubai Mall expansion

Emaar received bids from contractors in December 2013

The local/UK Dutco Balfour Beatty has emerged as the frontrunner for the estimated AED1bn ($272m) contract to build an extension to Dubai Mall for local developer Emaar Properties.

The work involves building a fashion avenue next to the existing mall, the lake, Burj Khalifa and the existing Address hotel, offering 75,000 square metres (sq m) of retail space and about 25,000 sq m of parking.

Emaar received bids from contractors in December 2013. The other bidders include the local Al-Futtaim Carillion, and Athens-based Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC).

Emaar is busy starting new projects at the Downtown Dubai District. It is evaluating bids for the contract to build its Address Residence Fountain Views development at its Downtown Dubai district, and last year it awarded Consolidated Contractors Company (CCC) the estimated AED700m ($191m) contract to build the Dubai Modern Art Museum and Opera House District.

The 2,000-seat venue will be built in Emaar’s Downtown Dubai development. In addition to the opera house, the local developer plans to build new hotels, studios and leisure facilities in the area. The consultant is the UK-based Atkins.
