Emergency power programme will boost countrys grid capacity by 3.7GW
From Sharm el-Sheikh: The Egyptian government has awarded $2.5bn worth of contracts to increase capacity of existing power plants since December.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Egypt Economic Development Conference in Sharm el-Sheikh on 13 March, Egypts Electricity & Energy Minister Mohamed Shaker said that the $2.5bn worth of deals would boost the countrys grid by 3.7GW by the summer of 2015.
We started the process in October and awarded the first contracts in December, said Shaker.
The majority of the accelerated programme will be installed by the US GE, which will provide and install turbines to boost capacity by 2.7GW.
Jeff Immelt, GEs CEO, also speaking on the sidelines of the event in Sharm el-Sheikh, said that 70 per cent of the turbines had already been delivered and were being installed.
The additional capacity will be installed by Germanys Siemens and Italys Ansaldo, as recently reported in MEED.
