Egypt awards $2.5bn worth of power contracts

Emergency power programme will boost country’s grid capacity by 3.7GW

  • Cairo’s accelerated power programme has seen $2.5bn of power plant contracts awarded since December
  • US contractor GE has taken majority of programme so far
  • Germany’s Siemens and Italy’s Ansaldohave also won contracts

From Sharm el-Sheikh: The Egyptian government has awarded $2.5bn worth of contracts to increase capacity of existing power plants since December.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Egypt Economic Development Conference in Sharm el-Sheikh on 13 March, Egypt’s Electricity & Energy Minister Mohamed Shaker said that the $2.5bn worth of deals would boost the country’s grid by 3.7GW by the summer of 2015.

“We started the process in October and awarded the first contracts in December,” said Shaker.

The majority of the accelerated programme will be installed by the US’ GE, which will provide and install turbines to boost capacity by 2.7GW.

Jeff Immelt, GE’s CEO, also speaking on the sidelines of the event in Sharm el-Sheikh, said that 70 per cent of the turbines had already been delivered and were being installed.

The additional capacity will be installed by Germany’s Siemens and Italy’s Ansaldo, as recently reported in MEED.
