Egypt car bomb worries foreigners

12 July 2015

Investors fear a deteriorating security situation as Egypt tackles Islamist attacks across the country

  • Italian consulate in Cairo attacked
  • First attack targeting foreigners this year
  • Islamist militants have taken responsibility

Isis (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) militants have taken responsibility for a car bomb attack that took place at the Italian consulate in Cairo on 11 July.

One person was killed in the attack, despited the consulate being closed at the time.

This is the latest in a series of isolated attacks across Cairo although it is the first time this year that an assault has targeted foreigners.

Militants across Egypt have been mainly targeting security personnel and government staff such as the assassination of a public prosecutor in June followed by battles between militants and the armed forces in north Sinai in the same week.

Contractors and analysts have recently told MEED that while the attacks will cause concerns for investors, the continued targeting of government officials and security personnel means the projects market remains relatively safe. Despite this, Egypt’s security situation has been worsening in recent months and the latest attack will be worrying as foreigners become targets.
