Egypt releases Zohdy

29 September 2003
Islamist militant Karam Zohdy was released in Cairo on 28 September. Zohdy, who is held responsible for masterminding the assassination of Egyptian president Anwar Sadat in 1981, was imprisoned for life after the attack. The former senior member of Gamaat Islamiya has been in prison longer than most murderers serving life sentences. After his release Zohdy returned to his hometown of Minya, 230 kilometres south of Cairo.

Khaled al-Istanbuli, the Gamaat Islamiya member who shot President Sadat on 6 October 1981 during a military parade, was executed for his part in the murder. Gamaat Islamiya, along with other Islamist groups, were intensely critical of Sadat for signing the 1979 peace treaty with Israel.
