Egypt suffers another rail crash

Train derails south of Cairo

At least 19 people have died in the second major train crash in Egypt in the last two months. More than 100 people have also been injured when a train travelling to an army camp derailed south of Cairo.

The crash follows an accident last November when a school bus collided with a train at a crossing in Central Egypt. The crash left 50 people dead, mostly children.

In the wake of the accident, both Egypt’s Transport Minister Mohamed Rashad al-Matini and the head of the rail authority resigned

The latest accident comes just a couple of weeks after a new transport minister was appointed. Hatem Abdel-Latif, an engineering professor at Ain Shams University and a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, was appointed to the role in early January.

Abdel-Latif will be under increasing pressure to tackle Egypt’s worsening track record in rail and road safety.
