Former petroleum minister Sherif Ismail heads new government

  • Interior and investment ministers retained
  • Former government resigned amid widespread corruption allegations

Egypt’s President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi swore in a new set of cabinet members on Saturday. The new government is headed by former Petroleum Minister Sherif Ismail, who assumed the role of prime minister.

Egypt’sformer Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb and his cabinet last week submitted their resignations to Al-Sisi, who accepted their decision to collectively step down.

The government’s resignation came as the country grappled with major corruption allegations.

Ismail is succeeded by Tariq al-Mullah, former head of the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation.

Al-Sisi is understood to have retained Ashraf Salman as minister of investment, as well as Magdy Abdel-Ghaffar as minister of interior.

In addition to its economic and political woes, the country’s tourism sector suffered a major blow in mid-September when Egyptian security forces killed 12 tourists and guides in the country’s Western Desert, after mistaking a tourist convoy for a convoy of terrorists.
