Egypt’s Petroleum Ministry has unveiled a project to distribute natural gas to the country’s El-Wadi el-Gedid governorate.
The project is part of a broader plan to make natural gas easily accessible to more households in Egypt.
The scope of the first phase of the project will make natural gas accessible to 14,000 households in El-Kharga city.
The project is expected to stoke domestic demand for natural gas and reduce dependence on refined petroleum products.
Egypt is dramatically transforming its infrastructure and economy in the wake of a series of large natural gas discoveries that have led to surging gas production in the country.
Last year, Italy-based oil company Eni said production from Egypt’s Zohr gas field had reached more than 2.7 billion cubic feet a day (cf/d), five months ahead of schedule.
The increase in gas production was achieved following the completion of planned onshore treatment production units. The last one was commissioned in April 2019.
The Zohr field is the largest gas discovery ever made in both Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea.
It was discovered in 2015 and is located within the offshore Shorouk block.
In July, Eni announced another offshore gas discovery in the North El-Hammad licence in the waters of the Nile Delta.
