Egyptian court orders Mubarak retrial

13 January 2013

Former interior minister will also be tried again

Egypt’s former president Hosni Mubarak will be allowed a re-trial after his appeal against his life sentence was accepted by a court in Egypt.

Mubarak was overthrown in 2011 and imprisoned in June for his role in the killing of protesters.

Former interior minister Habib al-Adly was also allowed a retrial. They are both expected to stay in custody due to separate investigations into their activities.

According to local reports, no new evidence will be heard and the retrial will be based on the same evidence heard in the original trial. Both Mubarak and Adly had originally faced possible death sentences over charges that they failed to prevent the killing of 850 protesters.

Mubarak’s continued poor health could also be considered by the new panel of judges appointed to conduct the retrial. No date has yet been set for the trial.
