El-Seif wins more HMC work

Saudi Arabia's El-Seif Engineering Contractingwas awarded in late June the biggest contract to date on the estimated $600 million Hamad Medical City (HMC) project in Doha. The award, worth an estimated $145 million, covers the finishes for accommodation units. Further packages are out for tender on the Ministry of Municipal Affairs & Agriculture project, which will initially be used as the athletes' village for the 2006 Doha Asian Games and subsequently will be retrofitted for medical purposes (MEED 14:5:04).

El-Seif beat off competition from four other contractors - the UK's Laing O'Rourke, the UAE's Al-Habtoor Engineering Enterprises, United Engineers (Malaysia) Berhadand Cyprus-based Joannou & Paraskevaides (J&P)- to win the package.

The contract covers finishings for 866 married housing and nursing accommodation units, the structures for which are being built by El-Seif under a QR 90 million ($24 million) contract awarded in December (MMED 19:12:03).

Bids are due to be submitted in the first half of July for two other packages on the development. They are for the energy centre and the structural works for the hospital buildings.

The US' Hill Internationalis the project manager on the HMC scheme; the consultant is Thailand's Fedcon.
