Phase one underway as Kingdom Tower lift pre-installation work starts
- Kone arrive on site for lift pre-installation
- Kingdom Tower set for completion in 2019 will be the tallest tower in the world
- Jeddah Economic Company looks to also develop surrounding area
Swedish elevator supplier Kone says it has started work on Saudi Arabias Kingdom Tower.
Kone Areeco, which is the joint venture involved in the planning and implementation of all vertical transportation for the project, arrived on site in January and is currently working on the pre-installation activity for the towers lift system.
At a media briefing held in Dubai on 10 May, Kones head of technology, Johannes de Jong said that the lift system will include Kones new double-decker installation, which will travel at 10 metres per second.
The one-kilomtre Kingdom Tower, which is being developed by the Jeddah Economic Company (JEC), was designed by Adrian Smith & Gordon Gill.
JECs CEO Mounib Hammoud also told MEED that the local Saudi Binladin Group is the main contractor working on the project and completion is expected in 2019.
JEC also plans to develop the surrounding areas with a number of mixed-use and commercial projects expected to be announced in the coming months.
