Emirates Aluminium Company (Emal) has awarded a AED1.8bn ($490m) contract for the power plant at its smelter project to the US’ GE.

The 2,000MW gas-fired combined cycle power plant will be built at the planned 700,000-tonne-a-year aluminium plant at Taweelah in Abu Dhabi. When complete, it will be the largest aluminium-producing plant in the world.

GE will supply six combustion turbine generators, four heat recovery steam generators, two steam turbine generators and two seawater cooling surface condensers.

Delivery of the equipment will start in December 2008 and will be completed in July 2009. The first phase of the smelter project is due to be completed in 2010.
