More than $1bn awarded to over 200 local companies on development of Abu Dhabi nuclear plant

Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (Enec) has received its first shipment of UAE-produced nuclear grade reinforcing steel for use in the construction of its nuclear power plant at Baraka.

The steel was supplied by Abu Dhabi’s Emirates Steel Industries, which is the only producer in the Middle East and North Africa region qualified to supply nuclear quality steel to the UAE nuclear energy programme, the steel producer says.

The product is a result of collaboration between Enec’s industrial development team and Emirates Steel to meet the requirements of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) certification.

The first order of 45,000 tonnes of rebar, of which 5,000 tonnes are nuclear quality, has now been delivered to the project site at Baraka in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi.

Enec has so-far awarded more than $1bn in contracts to over 200 local companies in the development of the $30bn nuclear plant, which it is targeting for completion by 2020.
