EU donates Eur 35 million to Jordan

06 October 2003
The EU on 6 October gave Amman Eur 35 million ($40.5 million) in an emergency grant aimed at combating the effects that the war in Iraq has had on the kingdom's economy. The grant is part of MEDA II, the EU's assistance programme offering technical and financial support to Mediterranean countries. MEDE II has a total value for Jordan of Eur 107 million ($123.9 million) over 2002-2004 (MEED 19:1:01).

The EU recently came under criticism for only allocating Eur 200 million ($230 million) to the reconstruction effort in Iraq. The sum is much less than expected and less than the amount given to Afghanistan after the Taliban was deposed. The US is hoping that $35,000 million will be raised during the Madrid donors' conference on 24 October (MEED 03:10:03)).
