EU foreign ministers to visit Tehran

20 October 2003
Foreign ministers from the UK, France and Germany are due to visit Tehran on 21 October to discuss the country's nuclear programme before a 31 October International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) deadline. UK Foreign Secretary Jack Straw announced on 20 October that during the visit the three countries would 'be impressing upon the Iranian authorities the urgent need for compliance with all of the requirements of the resolution passed on 12 September by the Board of Governors of the IAEA'.

Iran has been given a 31 October deadline to reveal all the details of its nuclear programme to the IAEA or be declared in breach of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT). If Tehran fails to meet the deadline the case could be referred to the UN Security Council (MEED 16:10:03).
