EXCLUSIVE: Dubai to award smart transport consultancy package

31 July 2018
Dubai is keen to build platform for transport research, development and innovation

Dubai’s Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) is to imminently appoint a consultant for the contract to develop an integrated traffic safety and sustainable city platform, sources familiar with the project tell MEED.

The project will look into providing a platform that supports transport-related research and development, testing site(s), academic participation and support trends in transportation innovations, traffic, safety and automotive industries.

MEED understands RTA and the selected UK-based consultancy are undertaking final negotiations before signing the contract.

The RTA expects to receive bids for the engineering, design and tender preparation and management contract for the Dubai Metro Green and Red Line extensions on 31 July.

The authority has also launched multiple initiatives over the past few years to foster smart transport planning and management in the emirate.

It inaugurated the AED335m ($90m) enterprise command and control centre (EC3) in May last year.

The EC3 is a central platform that facilitates control, monitoring and coordination between various transit modes within the emirate, including road, marine and metro. It also provides RTA with a platform to plan and simulate traffic management, especially for major events such as Expo 2020.

Last year, the RTA also awarded UK consultancy Atkins advisory work for organising a competition in Dubai that will feature the world’’s top autonomous vehicle (AV) technology management and development providers.

The RTA also recently awarded Binladin Group Contracting, the UAE arm of Saudi Binladin Group, the contract for the construction of a traffic management centre (TMC) in Barsha.

The building is expected to serve as the control centre for RTA’s comprehensive intelligent traffic system (ITS).

The ITS project covers several packages including infrastructure works with civil, electrical and communications components.

Other ITS packages under procurement by the RTA include:

  • Advanced traffic management system
  • Roadside dynamic information system
  • Traffic monitoring and information collection system
  • Maintenance of airport tunnel control room and traffic management centre video walls
  • Upgrade of urban traffic control (UTC) Scoot central system
  • IP-based CCTV replacement.
