Egyptian National Railways (ENR) expects to complete by the end of 2018 the study that would lead to the development of a reform strategy and masterplan for Egypt’s railway sector.
MEED understands the contract for the study was awarded in 2016 to a team of local Menarail Transport Consultants and an Italian railway engineering company.
The study is being financed by the World Bank.
Sources tell MEED the study findings could lead to ENR focusing more on public-private partnerships (PPP) and long-term concession agreements.
PPPs are enjoying a less-than-positive reception in Egypt’s transport sector due to fears they could trigger further increases in rail ticket prices.
Egypt has one of the oldest and longest rail networks in the region. ENR, a division of the Transport Ministry, operates the country’s 9,750-kilometre mainline network, which comprises 705 stations, and 885 bridges and tunnels.
