EXCLUSIVE: Egypt waterfront development plan gets underway

Project will fill in housing gaps and help Egypt meet sustainability goals

Bids for the masterplan preparation for Egypt’s Ras el-Hekma New Waterfront City are undergoing evaluation, sources familiar with the scheme tell MEED.

Egypt’s General Organisation for Physical Planning and New Urban Communities Authority, along with UN-Habitat, are developing the project.

UN is the client for the masterplan consultancy package.

The city will span 55,000 acres and is expected to rely on sustainable urban planning and design methods.

According to Rania Hedeya, head of UN-Habitat Egypt Country Program, the housing project “will fill in the gaps in the current housing programmes benefiting Egyptians with limited income” and increase efficiency by consolidating existing housing projects.

MEED understands the programme is “in line with the New Urban Agenda, Egypt’s 2030 Agenda and the international sustainable development goals.”

Ras el-Hekma bay is located 85 kilometres from Marsa Matrouh and 138km from the New Alamein City, which was one of several cities built under Egypt's Social Housing Programme in 2014.
