EXCLUSIVE: Jordan awards crossing terminal package

12 July 2018
International Finance Corporation is advising the planned expansion of the crossing and terminal facilities

Jordan’s Public Works and Housing Ministry (MPWH) is understood to have awarded Denmark-based Cowi the technical advisory contract for the expansion of the King Hussein Bridge border crossing that links Jordan and the West Bank, sources familiar with the project tell MEED.

The project entails the expansion and refurbishment of the terminal facilities as well as the bridge, which is the only crossing point for West Bank residents travelling abroad.

Washington-based International Finance Corporation (IFC), a division of the World Bank, is advising MPWH on the project, which is being developed using a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

MEED understands an estimated 97,000 cargo trucks and 2.2 million people travelled over the crossing in 2016.

The plan includes equipping the terminal with truck and passenger handling facilities, in addition to modern cargo and luggage scanning systems; multi-traffic lane entry and exit points fitted with electronic gates and check booths; and duty free retail spaces and medical emergency centre.
