The Kuwaiti government is considering plans to bid for global events such as the global expo and Fifa World Cup, according to a source with knowledge of the plans.
MEED understands the Touristic Enterprises Company will be spearheading the drafting of a plan to position Kuwait City as a potential venue for similar events in the future.
Dubai is set to host Expo 2020 between October 2020 and April 2021, while Qatar is hosting the 2022 Fifa World Cup.
Bidding for rights to host global events is a strategic decision made by a number of GCC cities in order to boost their tourism and hospitality industries in the face of dwindling oil revenues.
Qatar allocated nearly $200bn in infrastructure projects in line with its bid to host the 2022 Fifa World Cup.
Qatar said in early 2016 that it would be spending roughly $500m a week until 2021 to complete the close to $200bn-worth of infrastructure it has committed to hosting the 2022 Fifa World Cup.
