Kuwait’s Public Works Ministry (MPW) has yet to issue the tender for the construction of a road project that will link Kuwait City with the $4.3bn passenger terminal under construction at the Kuwait International airport.
The tender was expected to be released in the first quarter of 2017, but a spokesperson for MPW said in March that the project would be delayed by six months.
Japan-based Oriental Consultants completed the design work for the road project in 2016.
The new road will extend from the 2nd Ring Road to the southern part of Kuwait International airport’s Terminal 2, which is currently under construction. The road scheme is one of the most awaited tenders by local contractors, some of which are concerned about the slow pace of road project awards this year.
Kuwait has awarded $1.77bn-worth of road projects this year so far, equivalent to 44.5 per cent of project awards in 2016, according to MEED Projects data.
Currently, local contractors are preparing to bid for the road tender in South Ratqa issued in August by Kuwait Oil Company (KOC). The bids are due on 19 November.
On 23 October, the MPW said it is planning to tender 24 road projects worth an estimated KD4bn ($13.2bn).
