EXCLUSIVE: Metro main contract bids expected in June

Red Line North extension is required for one of the Fifa World Cup stadiums

Contractors are expected to submit bids for the Metro Red Line North extension by 3 June, sources with knowledge of the scheme tell MEED.

The line will extend from the under-construction Red Line North to the Al-Bayt stadium in Al-Khor, which is being built for the 2022 Fifa World Cup.

The project client awarded two consortiums in 2013 and 2014 for the Red Line North’s first phase. A consortium comprising Italy’s Rizzani de Eccher, South Korea’s Lotte E&C and local contractor Redco International is executing the red Line North’s at-grade and elevated package.

A second consortium comprising Italy’s Impregilo, South Korea’s SK Engineering & Construction and local Galfar al-Misnad is executing the line’s underground package.

MEED understands most if not all contractors bidding for the Green Line extension are planning to bid for the Red Line North extension.

Bids for the Green Line extension contract were submitted last December.

The consortiums that submitted a bid for the contract are understood to include:

  • Aktor (Greece) / Larsen & Toubro (India) / STFA (Turkey) / Yapi Merkezi (Turkey) / Aljaber Engineering (local)
  • FCC (Spain) / Consolidated Contractors Company (Lebanon)
  • Impregilo (Italy) / SK Engineering & Construction (South Korea) / Galfar al-Misnad Engineering & Contracting (local)
  • Porr (Austria) / Sixco / HBK Contracting (local)
  • QDVC (France/local) / GS Engineering & Construction (South Korea) / Al-Darwish Engineering (local)
  • Rizzani de Eccher (Italy) / Lotte E&C (South Korea) / Redco International (local)

The prequalified groups and their members are undertaking construction work on the first phase of the metro; the Porr-led team is executing the underground and elevated sections of the first phase of Doha Metro’s Green Line.

The new scheme is known as Green Line extension phase 1a. The scope is understood to involve about 10 kilometres of tunnel and 10km of above ground track.

MEED earlier reported that the project client invited consultants to bid for the project management services for the Green and Red Line extensions.
