20 March 2003
Two to three loud explosions around the southern suburbs of Iraq's capital Baghdad at 5:30am local time heralded the start of the US-led war in Iraq. The attacks took place just over one after the deadline set by President George Bush on 17 March for President Saddam Hussein and his family to leave Iraq.

Reporters in Baghdad said they heard explosions, jets flying overhead, anti-aircraft guns firing and air raid warnings.
